Easily the most drama on the day came in Canada Junior Light where the story had three plot lines and a lot of officiating – all of which came together in the end. The lead characters came forward in qualifying where Nico Fattore took pole from Garett Grist and Austin Milwain. Cue Act II, the prefinal, where Grist fouled a plug on the formation lap and retired. Milwain assumed the front row position, but shouldn’t have and after crossing first in the prefinal deferred the heat win to Fattore. Not that it mattered much, as the final was 25 laps long and both were on the front row with Grist mired at the back of the pack.
When the lights went out for the main event, Act III, Fattore and Milwain promptly checked out on the field, leaving a massive scrap for third which included William Vigneault, Giovanni Pizzale-Rhead, Artem Korolev, Kevin Morgan and a late arriving Grist, who was on the move from the back of the pack and joined the podium fight on lap five. He spent the next fifteen laps picking his way through and in the dying stages worked his way clear to a comfortable third ahead of Pizzale-Rhead, Morgan and Korolev, each inside of a half-second. Then the plot thickened.
Working the final lap after having spent 24 pushing, Milwain made his bid for the win running through turn six and had it, or most of it, heading into turn seven. Fattore tried to counter, and when nose touched wheel a piggy-back followed, which led to Milwain retiring – and moved Grist to second. Post race, officials issued a three-position penalty for the incident, dropping Fattore to fourth, and moving Grist to the top of the blocks! Pizzale-Rhead was then second and Morgan third. Fattore settled in fourth – his win will come – and Vigneault was fifth after Korolev ran afoul in tech. This race was a reason to stay on the fences for junior.
